3-in-1 Sensor of Blade Deflections, Loads, and Wind Conditions
GiGAN-2 is a Eurostars-2 project (ID E*114201) that aims to transform wind turbines into intelligent, self-monitoring systems through an innovative combination of fiber optic shape sensors and aeroelastic modeling. By embedding sensors inside turbine blades, the GiGAN system measures structural deflections, translates them into real-time wind conditions and load data, and predicts structural fatigue. This technology enables simultaneous performance optimization and lifespan extension, especially in critical components like gearboxes and shafts, which often fail prematurely.
The solution is particularly valuable for onshore turbines with rotor diameters between 80 and 100 meters, but is designed to scale to larger offshore turbines, representing a major growth market. With a target cost of €11,000 per turbine (compared to €30k–40k for Lidar systems), GiGAN makes continuous, high-accuracy monitoring affordable and scalable. The project also includes a pilot with ERG in Italy and aims to certify the system for Vestas V90 models before expanding to a broader set of turbine types.
